Strat-o-matic Baseball League
Member Overview of a
Multi-Faceted League
**
"Minor League Strat", Phase II –
Wolfman Shapiro **
(In March I wrote about a new
league I joined this year that has as strong a focus
on building your major league squad as it does for your minor league
players. Here is an
update on how the Skokie Wolfmen are doing and the new minor
leaguers we acquired.)
(Notes
from the Wolfman:
In early February of this year, I responded to a notice I
received via StratDraft, of a new league forming. My
criteria was it had to be a computer based league which used a
CM or computer manager for the games to be played, as I have a
pretty busy personal schedule including what I do for my
livelyhood so I only have time to tweek my CM for my team.
The name of this league was called the Minor League Strat (MLS)
which had a focus on building your minor league component of
your team as well as your Major League Franchise.
I am going to
recommend that if you didn't read my first article on this
league back in March, of this year, that you follow the link
below and then come back to the article. The first article I did
give a very thorough description of the league and the initial
players we drafted, which basically is a team that is comprised
of players from the champion 2015 Kansas Royals, their minor
system plus a few other players we drafted from MLB teams not
picked by our members and some additional minor leaguers we
drafted.
The previous article is at:
http://www.ultimatestratbaseball.com/USBN-3-2016/WolfmanShapiro-MLS-March2016.htm
In this
new update I will report specifically how our Skokie Wolfmen are doing as our
season at the time of this article will finish in September with
21 games left to play. Thus, unless there is a total
collapse of our team, we will be entering the MLS playoffs.
Our division is very competitive as it appears the two wild card
teams will come from this division called Munson (named after
the great Yankee catcher) as only 4 games separates us and we
just beat the top team 2 out of 3, as sit in 3rd place.
It seems, "Our
Boys" have had great trouble beating the top teams above us and
it is uncertain unless Carolina and Summertime go through a
tough period of time in their last games if we will be able to
raise above being the second wild card team. But regardless if
this happens or not, I am confident that once we get into the
playoffs and our season starts over that perhaps with our
defense, small ball straties and decent pitching this can take
us to victory as a dark horse just as happened with the 2014
version of the real KC Royals. Our two other opponents in
our division, along with our own team are near the top in
hitting by average for our league as well as in the top four
teams of ERA in the league too. So this is why all 3 teams
are very competitive, the stats I give below will clearly
demonstrate this.
Also since the
last time I reported on our league, we have conducted another draft
(for more minor league prospers via the MLB amateur draft) plus
another auction to add additional
players to our minor league system so please find within this
report, how this worked out.
I can
definitely say it has been an interesting season because
after we had played 96 games into the season we were greatly
slumping and I thought due to our lack of hitting, we would not
make it into the playoffs but in the league's months of August
and September (we are about 9 days ahead of the real schedule)
we are 27-9 including an 11 game winning streak (the same time
the Chicago Cubs did the same in real life). But even
playing this well, we only decreased our games behind the
division leader Carolina by 5 games as Carolina had a 9 game
winning streak and Summertime a 14 game winning streak. So
as you see, our division is a real pain the butt!
So please find below my latest report about this league called
Minor League Strat as well as the exciting exploits of another
Wolfman built team with my unique analyst of how our team is
generating it's success - enjoy ....
The
Skokie Wolfmen Via
for the Championship of the MLS
(- or also known as the KC
Boys - )
As we
indicated in our first report back in March, we believed we had
a great chance of success to compete in this league as
essentially our team is based upon the 2015 World Champion
Kansas City Royals, with some additional players we drafted to
try to close any holes which this team had. Now, normally
I prefer to go with a team with more power hitters but picking
the hitters and pitchers of Kansas City during the building of
our team was the hand we were dealt and our best chance I
believed.
We started our
season losing our first 4 games, the 1st game we played we lost
due to a mismanagement of our computer manager but then we had a
7 game win streak to take us to 7-4 and tied for second. The
closest we ever came was 1 game out of first in our division on
June 1st (league date) at a record of 23-16. For the
months of June and July, our team was basically winning one and
losing one - we tried to increase our ability to win by letting
our great closer Wade Davis pitch more innings but then we used
our great closer up too early in the season and we still had not
made much of a dent to rise in the standings. However, on
July 19th and then again on July 21st, we were only two games
over .500 and 11 games out of 1st place in our division.
At this point I didn't think we had any chance to make the
playoffs. It would take a miracle but then don't miracles
usually follow the Wolfman?
But then,
after July 21st, all of a sudden our team came alive and since
that date we have gone 32-13 ... what was happening is finally
our hitters woke up - and our pitchers came alive as well as we
lead the league with 16 shutouts, which in such a league like
this, this is no easy feat. Now, we chose the Giants
stadium because the ball park HR is just 1 vs. lefties and
righties. As you can see from the league stats I shared in
this article below, we have quite a few hitters who came alive
to be hitting around .300 too and are now hitting quite
respectable as a team.
Here are some
of the key strategies I have been using to help our team turn
its season around to pretty much assure we will get into the
playoffs.
a)
I have tried to pay attention to my opponents teams and their
ball parks and use the best pitchers I have which play to my
opponent's weakness - if their ball parks have a high ball park
HR, to throw starters which have a low or no ballpark homer on
their card and save any pitchers I have with high ball park
homers to pitch in our park or ballparks of my opponents which
all have a low hr ballpark number as well. The same with
seeing if my opponents are weaker vs. a left handed starter or
right handed starter.
b)
I am playing small ball so I have tried to more steal bases, do
more hit and run and taking the extra base more than normal as
we can, take more risks to be agressive!
c)
while our starters are adequate (although Cueto has done quite
well as expect but C. Young ouch!) - we have a strong relief
staff (even when we lost Davis) - we drafted extra relievers who
have limited innings but had good cards, so we have tried to
maximize these relievers which we have done successfully since
we always use our starters around 6 innings to get as many
starts as we can.
d)
when we have a lead, our team has six positions we can start a
"1" defender to put into the field (Perez-C; Hosmer - 1B,
Escobar - SS, Gordon/Gardner LF, Dyson-CF, Cain - RF) - to have
our best defense to help our team with our good relievers to
hold the lead - which is what won the 2015 MLB Championship for
KC.
e)
we have also tried to platoon various positions - which
includes:
Soto at catcher vs. LHP as Perez is weak - this platoon
has produced 23 HRs with 86 RBIs
Using Morales
at 1B with spot starts by Hosmer - combined average
around .291, 18 HRs, 94 RBIs
Using
Moustakas (our best and most productive hitter BTW) and Garcia
at 3B which has combined for over a .300 avg, 29 HRs, 115
RBIs
these platoons
have helped us as an example, we have also platooned in LF and
RF, for some reason our team has done very well against LH
starting pitching.
our team is hitting .265 which better than I expected with a
3.42 ERA, if we were in the real world with a team that has this
type of pitching and hitting, this would be a very competitive
team indeed especially since we don't use a DH even.
Thus, we have
tried our best to maximize the performance of our players as
best we can.
Also we have
an on-base percentage of .339 as a team which has
been helped by our players walks and HBPs -- so with some good
relief pitching, the best fielding team, good on-base and decent
starting, with some success stealing bases - this is why our
team has done well. Of course I was hoping we would be the
top team in our division but I believe we have a very balanced
team that is quite ready to compete for the league
championship in the playoffs. It is similar to the situation
with the 2016 KC Royals, who were counted out - and then all of
a sudden they have started playing well like the Skokie version
and if they can just get into the playoffs as a wild card team
they can't be ignored and could face the Cubs in the WS?
So what I have
done below is to share various stats from the reports of our
league from the computer game below. Under each section of
the Wolfmen and League stats, I give some more comments
and my analysis. Next month we will let you know how
Skokie finishes it season.

fairly well in the first two months going 29-22 but then in June

but have done well against the Gehrig Division. Also we are

(You can see that
Skokie is the #6 hitting team - leads the league in least amount
of errors committed - one of the top teams for stealing -
compared to Carolina and Summertime - just hitting a few points
less but basically our team in collective statistics is very
similar. As you will see below - our 3 teams are all near
the top in team ERA - Summertime has Arrieta - which is why the
opponent's average is the lowest. Skokie's chance to
possibly take the division will depend on which of our 3 teams
has the best players to continue to use due to usage at the end
of the season.)

(Here you see
our hitters - Moustakas has been our best hitter, we have used
up Garcia at 3B, but this platoon has been our most productive
position. Gardner is hitting a bit better then expected
and Cain also has been very consistent. Morales was not
hitting well at the beginning of the season but has come back
and with Moustakas are two of the best OB men in the league.
We were hoping more from Byrd, who we use against LHP in the OF
- Zobrist is having a typical year - Dyson is an amazing backup
defensive OF who we are starting now more. I wish we could
play Hosmer more but Morales has two good of a hitter's card,
and we don't have a DH in our league. Perez was having
trouble hitting at the beginning of the year but has been
stepping up. I doubt we will see anyone with 100 RBIs, as
the RBIs for our team is distributed amongst its team players. )

(We are pretty
proud of our pitching staff - our trio of relief pitchers
Herrera, Madson and Davis have done great ... Our lefties
Morales and Hardy have held their own. C. Young has been
surprising as a starter and Cueto is Cueto, our ace.
Buchholz is our secret starter who may help us in the playoffs -
Volquez has been doing really well in most recent games.
Verhagen did great for us in a limited capacity.)

(As a team
with an average of 0.7 HRs per game is very good and 1.24 Whip
for our team. On an individual process Davis and Madison
have been tough in relieff - We see why C. Young has done so
well - Cueto has a great whip as our ace starter along with C.
Young)
-- So this
concludes the statistical view of the MLS and how Skokie is
performing compared to the other teams in the league. I
would say I am satisfied with how our team is performing and if
we can go 14-7 in our last 21 games we could see a 95 win
season.
Finally I want
to talk about the other minor leagues players we acquired in an
additional draft we did for other minor league prospect,
especially linked with the high school and college players who
were drafted by the major league teams in the summer and other
prospects that Major League teams have signed from other
international star players like in Cuba, Japan and so on ...
What Happened in the MLS with the Amateur Draft and the
International Stars Auction?
For the Amateur Draft,
Skokie had the #3 draft pick in a 9 round draft. Besides
the young U.S. college and high school players who were drafted
by the major league teams, we also had access to the minor
league players of the six teams who's minor league system was
not picked and, the other category which allowed us to pick a
minor league player from a team which was picked was if that
minor leaguer did not play in 2015 due to some injury or a young
player picked by a team but was picked up too late in the 2015
minor league season and didn't play.
Here are the nine minor
leaguers we picked with some notes next to each:
Jameson Taillon RHP Pittsburgh (he didn't play in 2015,
a key young starter for the Pirates)
Zack Burdi RHP Louisville NCAA (drafted by the White
Sox, a good chance to be in majors quickly)
Joey Wentz LHP Shawnee HS Kansas (another top 50 pick
in the amateur draft, good young pitcher)
Seuly Matias OF Royals AZL Rookie (we lost this
top 30 KC Prospect due to non-play in 2015)
Jacob May OF Charlotte AAA (a highly rated OF
prospect with the White Sox)
Jason Coats OF Chicago (AL) MLB (another
highly rated White Sox OF prospect, in MLB in 2016)
Tom Hatch RHP Oklahoma St. NCAA (one of the Chicago
Cubs top young pitchers they picked)
Bailey Clark RHP Duke NCAA (another Chicago Cubs top
young pitcher picked in the amateur draft)
Jacob Heyward OF Maimi NCAA (the brother of Jason
Heyward of the Chicago Cubs)
Then ... in our
International Auction I was able to add 3 more young players
....
Randy Arozarena SS (Cuban infielder/outfielder Randy
Arozarena, 20-year-old signed by the Cardinals)
Diego Infante OF (#18 ranked International
prospect signed by the Tampa Bay Rays)
Francisco Morales RHP (#12 ranked International
prospect signed by the Philadelphia Phillies)
Now .. we are allowed
to keep 40 or 45 players in our minor league system, so this is
the other key players we will have access to in the 2017 season
of the MLS, some of these players already will get cards and be
in the majors:
IN THE MINORS IN
2015:
Raul Mondesi SS
(card)
Kyle Zimmer RHP
Bubba Starling OF (card)
Nolan Watson RHP
Ashe Russell RHP
Matt Strahm LHP (card)
Scott Blewett RHP
Jorge Bonifacio OF
Alec Mills RHP (card)
Ryan O'Hearn 1B
Chase Vallot, C
Brett Eibner OF (card)
Ramon Torress SS/2B
Amalani Fukofuka of
Brian Flynn LHP (card)
Ricky Aracena SS
Hunter Dozier 3B
Reymond Fuentes OF (card)
W. Merryfield INF (card)
Pounders RHP (card)
ROOKIES FROM 2015 WITH
CARDS
Almonte,M RP
Cuthbert,C INF/3B (card)
Gore,T OF (card)
Pena,F C
Cole Figuroa 3B
Luke Maile C (card)
Rico Noel OF
Darnell Sweeney (S) INF
Drew Verhagen RP (card)
IN CONCLUSION:
So I think with the combination of the rookies and prospects
that the Skokie Wolfman have along with the players we have
already in the majors, not only will we competing within the
next month of the MLS season for the league championship but we
have a lot of possibilities to build our team with great youth
to support this for many years.
We also want to thank the
commissioner of the MLS (who still wishes to be nameless and
behind the scenes) for creating this SOM Baseball league with so
much variety and to mirror what the GMs of real major league
baseball teams must do to keep their teams competitive and
filled with great young players. That such moves can eventually
help the parent club to take them to a league championship which
has happened with the real Kansas City Royals the last two years
and is going on with other teams now like the Chicago Cubs and
the Houston Astros.
Hope you all enjoy my update
of this fascinating league ...
all the best ...
