Bruce Foster Challenge - Playoffs - World Series - Part 3
**
(Next up, the Skokie Wolfmen have the chance to win the championship
of the league after sweeping
"The Wrong
Stuff" in the first round but now they must face the powerful "Lambing
Ewes"
who was the most difficult team to play
against during the season in the league as
we were unable to beat them in their home
park, what chance did Skokie have? )
The World Series Report
of the Great Salt Lake League
WOLFMAN's
COMMENTS
The
Wolfmen's opponent for the world series was the "Lambing Ewes"
who had the best record in our league with 95 victories.
As mentioned before Skokie was 3-9 vs. the Ewes, 0-6 in Lambing,
which has a very strong hitters park. If you compare the hitters
of the Ewes who led the league with 374 homer runs (that is an
average of 2.3 homers per game) including G. Foster with 80, J.
Bautista with 62, B. Ruth with 45 and and three other hitters
with 30 or more against Skokie, if the Ewes every got a big
lead, Skokie wouldn't have a chance, which is basically what
happened in the Ewes ball park (based upon Fulton County Stadium
1978 [ball park homers 1-20 both sides] ) during the season. The Ewes also
lead the league in runs scored with 1140 vs. Skokie only scoring
673 that is almost twice as many runs (a difference of 467).
So with four of the possible seven games that would be played in
the Ewes' stadium, they were highly favored to win. The key
question being asked was, could the 4 aces of the Wolfmen hold
the Ewes' hitters/sluggers down?
Back to discussing the Ewes team performance, in addition to
their power hitting, average wise they had Ruth hitting at .372
and G. Foster at .333 - with Ruth leading the league with 172
walks, their on-base as a team also leading the league with .359
average. One advantage Skokie had over the Ewes is that they
did make more errors during the season. Foster had an
incredible 213 RBIs with 5 other players with over 100 RBIs
while Skokie's RBI leader was Delahanty with 92. Of course
the Ewes' team ERA was 4.48 and basically they had two solid ace
starters with P. Martinez (23-13 3.34 ERA) and D. Gooden (27-11,
most wins in the league, 3.90 ERA). If Skokie had a chance
it would need to beat there # 3 and # 4 starters who had ERAs
over 5+. And as far as relief for the Ewes, they really
only had one pitcher, B. Humphreys who pitched 136 innings and
was 12-9 with 12 saves and a 3.90 ERA.
Well this
would be the ultimate test for the Wolfmen. Obviously if they
couldn't score many runs against the Ewes they would have no
chance and truly too, they would have to be able to win some
games in Ewes' park or they were a gonner. Again due to my trip
to Australia, Bruce was looking over our team to make sure the
Team Strategy was all in place properly. Lets see how the
games turned out ...

To start the World Series, each team
went with their aces. The Ewes struck first in the
bottom of the 3rd when the "Babe" hitfing a two run homer.
However in the top of the 4th, the Wolfmen amazingly teed off on Pedro
Martinez with 9 Runs, including 8 hits and walk, a triple by
Lajoie and Combs and the final scoring coming on a 3 run
homer by Delahanty. This basically put the game out of reach
as Greg Maddux pitched a complete game for his second win in
the playoffs although Mercer did hit a homer in the bottom
of the sixth.
So Skokie was up 1-0 in the best of 7
game series surprising the heavily favorite Ewes, who had
home advantage for the series.

This game was all the Ewes as they
bombed Leonard early in the game with Bailey and Murcer each
hitting a gland slam home run. With Skokie down by
10-1 early in the game it had no way to come back plus
Gooden pitched a complete game shutting down Skokie and
going himself 2-0 in the playoffs. So now the series was tied
one game a piece as the series went to Skokie for game 3.

Once again in this next game the winner was
decided by a blow out. Although the Ewes took an early
3-1 to lead, Skokie exploded in the 7th and 8th innings to
take a huge lead. And all of this happened, when Skokie's best
hitter Lajoie had been injured for the rest of the series in
the bottom of the 1st inning. For Skokie fans even
though their team had a 2-1 lead in the series, could they
still win without Lajoie (their team captain), using
Phillips as their backup who didn't hit much in the regular season
and was very poor defensively?
In any case, Richards was pitching well until the 7th inning
when Skokie errupted for five hits and a walk in that inning
including a 3 run homer by G. Brown. Skokie continued in the
8th giving Richard problems with four hits and 3 walks
including a two run double by Wallace. Alexander had his
challenge in the 5th, when Ruth Tripled and scored on
Mercer's singled followed by another homer by Bailey but
Alexander was able to shut the Ewes down for the rest of the
way.

Finally the World Series saw its first
close game as both Higbe for the Ewes and Santana for the
Wolfmen pitched very well. But Santana's weakness all
season long has been giving up the long ball which came to
bite him in the back as the Ewes scored 2 runs in the second
to take the lead on another Bailey homer and Murcer's home
in the 7th was the decisive run for the game. Again Skokie's
hitters were shutdown perhaps missing Lajoie as Higbe's
strong showing with help in the 8th from Humphreys kept the
Wolfmen down for a 3-2 Ewes win and tying the series at 2
games a piece. Game 5 then goes back to Ewes stadium
for a decisive game that could decide who would win this up
and down series.

This key game featured purportedly the
best starters from each team, a rematch from Game 1 of
Maddux vs. Martinez. Skokie struck quickly in the first
inning with 3 runs with a triple by Torriente knocking in
two runs and then Parker singling home Torriente. The Ewes
came back with two runs in the 2nd on another two run bomb
by Mercer. But then Skokie struck again in the bottom
of the 2nd as Combs Tripled, Harper knocked him home with a
single and Brown doubled home Harper. Maddux was able
to find his groove only allowing a run in on the 5th (due to
a Skokie error) and then shutout the Ewes the rest of the
way for his third victory in the playoffs. The Wolfmen
were able to hit Martinez early even without their best
hitter Lajoie injured and out for the series.
So the Wolfmen had a 3-2 lead in the
series needing to win one more in Ewes' home park to become
the league champion, could their pitching stop the Ewes in
their hitter's park to take the championship?

Game 6 was do or die for the Ewes and
Doc Gooden, although he gave up an early lead to the Wolfmen
then he slammed the door shut the rest of the way giving his
team a chance to do what they do best, hitting and slugging
as the Ewes once again pounded the Wolfmen in their home
park. Gooden also became the second pitcher in the playoffs
to go 3-0. In the bottom of the 4th, Bautista's two
run homer gave the Ewes a 3-2 lead and they never looked
back. In the bottom of the sixth, Bailey, a thorn in
the Wolfman's side hits another homer, another grand slam
and the Ewes showed Skokie they had no intention to lie down
and just give the series to the Wolfmen who would have win
it in game 7 in the Ewes park to become the champions. In
the next and last game of the series,
Skokie would go with their best starter Pete Alexander
against Richard, a rematch of Game 3. Could Alexander
hold the Ewes once again and bring home the gold for Skokie?

Skokie threatened in the first with 2nd
and 3rd and no outs but couldn't score. In the second Combs
single in home Gainey as three hits brought in the 1st run
of this final game. In the third Skokie struck again
and takes a 4-0 lead when Richards walks 3 hitters and
Parker triples them all in. Alexander was mowing down
the Ewe hitters through the first six innings. The game
appears to be all Skokie.
In the 7th -- Skokie strikes for two
more as Combs triples again and Torriente walks and steals
second, then Brown doubles both runners in for a 6-0 Skokie
lead. Time is running out for the Ewes. In the
bottom of the 7th the Ewes finally get on the board with a
Gordon home run but as we go into the bottom of the 9th,
with 3 outs to go, Alexander has a 6-1 lead. However,
the Ewes begin to battle back and Bailey the thorn in
Skokie's side after Uggla singles hits another homer run
(his 5th of the series) as clearly Bailey was the key hitter
for the Ewes in this series to make it 6-3 with no body out.
After Gordon walks, Skokie brings in Klink to face Bowa who
singles - Shirley comes in to face Ruth and gets him to
flyout but a very costly error by Phillips at 2B taking
Lajoie place (as this might have ended the game) allows
Gordon to score to make 6-4, second and third, one out and
the homer champ of the league Foster (80 Hrs for the season)
is up facing Mark Clear who walks him to fill the bases - a
sigh of relief from the Skokie fans. Then Baustista is
up another long ball threat but Clear gets him to hit into a
game ending double play as he saves the 3rd victory in the
playoffs for Alexander and Skokie wins the series by the
skin of their teeth to take it all in an upset series win
over the mighty Ewes!

World Series Summary:
The World
Series was a hard fought contest and as you saw, the Ewes had a chance in the 9th inning of game 7 to make a tremendous
comeback. Four of the games were blowouts, two by each team. The
last few games per say were closer. Clearly Ed Bailey was
the hitting star for the Ewes with 5 HRs and 15 RBIs and if Doc
Gooden could have pitched game 7, the champs could have been the
Ewes as he shut Skokie down twice. However Maddux who
struggled during the regular season only winning 15 games really
shined and combined with two good starts by Alexander to keep
the Ewes down from scoring with consistent hitting from Combs
(13 for 31 at .419 with 10 RS, 8 RBIs, 4 Triples) plus Brown
with 8 RBIs (low average but clutch hits to score runs). Another
key was that Skokie was able to score early in a number of the
games and then hold on to its leads, this is what gave the victory to
the Wolfmen.
Now I was unsure
how our boys would do vs. the Ewes as I said before, we had lost
all six games in their park during the season and only split in
Skokie. Then when we lost Lajoie early in game 3, it didn't look
good for us. But again the saying is "good pitching can stop
good hitting" - I think this was the main key to Skokie's
success. Other than Bailey and Murcer, we shutdown the other
power hitters (especially Foster) in this series. So dear
readers, I hope you have enjoyed the reporting of this series
along with the Wolfman's entire series following the guidance of
another "Foster", Mr. Bruce.
Comments from Bruce Foster after the victory:
It is important
for your readers to know that this system is not flawless. There
are probably better systems out there. I do not always win with
my system. There is still a lot of luck involved. A lot
determines the strength of the other teams and the dice rolls,
especially in a short seven game playoff format. However, I do
think that some of the strategies of this system will help some
or most players. All in all, Strat is only an understanding of
mathematic probability. Most times the odds hit, but not all
times.
Dr. Bruce Foster
Comments from the
Manager of the Ewes:
(Wolfman
-- I had a chance
to contact the manager of the Ewes, his name is Ruben G. and he
lives in Canada, it is always nice to have a person linked to the
managing of the teams that you face aye?)
Ruben:
I grew up around the
Montreal area and have been playing with strat since I was
16-17 ... we would form leagues and play at school (high
school) or at each others homes. As we grew older and
attended the local university, the games were still being played
but between classes or whenever we found time. Of course as
guys started getting married and having kids, time for strat
became more rare. Here we learnt how to read cards, counts
points on the cards, see the value cost of the players with
GBAs ... etc.
So I started the on line version maybe 5 years ago. For sure
its a different game in the sense you have to 'predict' what
HAL will do...platooning is harder and decisions to steal,
throw home or take an extra base (amongst other things) is
really not up to the real-life manager. You try to control
these things with the settings you are provided with, but
sometimes you are left scratching your head.
Yeah, I
have won about 7 online seasons out of around 60ish
leagues. I have over a .500 record for sure and have won a
few credits by losing or winning championships and playing
in the 24 man league teams and winning my division. I
haven't tried any tournaments so far though.
Well
this team (the Ewes) was a good one especially considering
the run differential we had of +336 ... couldn't finish it
off though. I have a 106 win team but it to lost in the
playoffs as well. What can you do? Every team I draft I
think has a good chance of winning but luck sometimes goes
against it.
I love
playing with the best hitters in baseball, so I usually go
for great power teams and players. In this case I wanted to
try the "Babe" and see how the best statistical season in
the history of baseball would do (sure its debatable if he
has such card but it was undoubtedly in the top 5). I also
went for the first time with strike out pitchers because I
was toying around with the idea that ground ball pitchers
give up runs or let runners advance with those groundballs,
but strikeouts runners won't. So this team had Martinez,
Gooden and JR and I averaged over a strikeout an inning. I
settled for Higbe as the fourth starter due to salary
constraints. I knew these pitchers would go deep into games
so I only went with a 3 inning reliever in Humphreys which
is the first time I used such a reliever. I liked his
points and his salary ... he did well for us. The only
problem of going with 4 asterisked starting pitchers is that
you have to spend a lot of money to get them and therefore
lose 1/2 a million picking up the last starter (because you
need 5 starters). And its best if he is only a starter
because you wouldn't want a 1/2 million dollar pitcher
relieving (Note like we did - Wolfman).
Yeah so
I like to go with the big pop and I have won League
Championships before with this strategy. I find that strat
is hitter centric with 50% of the rolls landing on the
hitter's cards ... so the better hitting team usually wins.
I.E. --when the roll lands on the hitter's cards, than
better make it worth it. So I go for players with good
on-base (don't want to create outs) and a lot of pop (HRs to
get it done). In fact all the championships I have won was
when Sports Illustrated was running the on line version game
... it seems to me some things have changed with the
internal setting of HAL though ... I am still trying to
figure out these subtle changes. At home, I usually have a
great record because of the pop in my lineups ... a HR is a
lot easier to score than 2-4 hits/walks strung together.
I know
that anything can happen in any series...lady luck can turn
her back against anyone in a short series...but I liked my
chances against you...Pedro lost twice (rare) and you strung
your hits together ... stuff happens so its not surprising
but I was just
bummed!
(Thanks
Ruben for being a good sport and worthy opponent and good
luck in your future leagues to add more league championships
to your legacy -
Wolfman)
Final Comments from
the Wolfman:
So, the main purpose of this
challenge was to see if another person, using the system done by
Bruce, could see success. As stated in the introduction
page, what Bruce mainly helped me with was which players to
select for our team that was based upon the spreadsheets he had
created following his system. This system gave a value to all the
players in the All Time Great set and thus, you could observe
which of the players in the set would perform
the best using Petco Park as the home stadium of the team. Of
course, I had to agree not to share these spreadsheets but I
was allow to discuss the strategies we used with this team, which
Bruce gave me permission to do so.
As I mentioned before, in this
version of SOM Baseball, the on-line version, there are some
differences how it works verses the board game and the computer
game. Since Bruce has played in many leagues as well as
tournaments which use this form of league play (with injuries
and no usage limitations per say), thus testing it many times, he
has had enough victories and championships that this model is
not a fluke even if it is not 100%. Plus, I did challenge him to
see if I could have success and I believe my first league
championship in only my 2nd attempt speaks volumes. Let's
compare the two teams I have had to play with in this version of Strat Baseball
so far for full seasons.
So how did the
Skokie Wolfmen perform from my league last year when I participated in
the Barnstormers Tournament, Round 1, late spring of 2014? Well
for this tournament I drafted a team with a hitter's park, good
defense and speed with power, but my starters were far weaker
than this latest version of Skokie. I did select one of the best
closers of all times but in this form of all star league his
presence didn't help us too much. So lets compare
some key stats of these two teams, one from last year and
champion Wolfmen from this current season. However, if wish to revisit Skokie's first try to compete,
please find below is a link to the report I made last year.
2014 Version
of the Skokie Wolfmen
(75-87)
Team Hitting:
Batting Average: .268 / OB .347 / 906 Runs / 278 HRs / 209 SB
-- Leaders: Bonds 78 HRs, Bench 50 HRs, Schmidt 42 HRs; Bonds
160 RBIs; Morgan 64 SB;
Wally Backman (.348) / Derek Jeter (.333) / Ralph Gar (.302)
Team Pitching: ERA: 5.64 / Runs Allowed: 981 /
HR Allowed: 226 / 651 Walks / 1.65 Whip / 34 saves
-- Leaders: D. Ruether 16-17 4.68 ERA / B. Donovan 17-18 4.95
ERA / Hoffman 5-10 4.96 ERA 26 Saves

2015 Version of the Skokie Wolfmen
(92-70)
Team Hitting:
Batting Average. .264 / OB .329 / 673 Runs / 67 HRs / 47 SB
-- Leaders: G. Brown 17 HRs, Ashby 12 HRs; Delahanty 92
RBIs; LaJoie 16 SB;
LaJoie (.347) / Delahanty (.321) / G. Brown (.317) / Cardenal
(.301)
Team Pitching:
ERA: 3.49 / Runs Allowed: 617 / HR Allowed: 198 / 517 Walks /
1.17 Whip / 21 saves
-- Leaders: Alexander 25-11 2.70 ERA / J. Santana 21-13 3.53 ERA
/ Leonard 19-19 3.57 ERA
Klink 5-1 5 saves 3.18 ERA / Clear 1-0 8 saves 3.08 ERA
In the final
analysis although the 2015 Wolfmen scored 233 less runs, they
also gave up 364 less runs too,
so even if you have a tremendous and powerful hitting team with
good speed, if your pitching can't
stop your opponents you can't win games. In the 2014 version of
the Wolfmen we didn't have enough money to go after good
pitching plus there were two starting fielding positions we had
which were a bit
weak as going after so many superstar hitters also hurt us. In the 2015
version of the Wolfmen about 40+% of our money was spent on
getting four ace starters who threw over 90% of the innings for
our team. But the 2015 Wolfmen had to use the best
pitcher's park to support such a team to see success.
Well, as you can see from the
entire report in this issue, for the 2015 edition of the Wolfmen
it was a long season spanning over two months starting in early
March through the early part of May to test if Bruce's system
could work for another manager. Skokie had its moments where we
had some bad streaks where either our pitchers couldn't hold the
other teams down or our boys weren't hitting. Injuries
hurt our team as some of our key players were out for long
stretches and at one time we had like 4 players injured at the
same time which for a team using platooning at six positions to
win, this could have killed us but we survived that difficult
time as well and moved forward to win our division by 3 games.
In the end, it was
the work of our four ace pitchers that we had, pitching over
1300 innings and compiling a combined record of 80-64 with an
ERA of 3.39 (which is pretty impressive for a league filled with
the best hitters of all time) that brought us victory. As
Bruce told me in the beginning, the key to Skokie's success
would come almost entirely from its starters which is perhaps
why, other than Clear and Klink who only pitched 72 innings with
13 saves, the relievers didn't offer a great deal of help and
why buying even one of the top relievers wasn't necessary at
all.
Our keys were having a
totally small ball team with good defense (we had "1" fielders
at 1B/2B/SS/CF/LF) and some on-base potential that helped us
score enough runs. Although we didn't hit many homers
(67 with Brown having 17 playing part time due to injuries) we did
have 106 Triples and quite a few were hit during the playoffs.
Clearly LaJoie and Delahanty were our best hitters during the
season and Alexander was our most consistent starter (mostly due
to the fact the other teams only had two great pitchers they could
afford so their third and fourth starters were a bit weaker).
So this was an
amazing experience to have a chance to learn and implement a
strategy that has brought a brother strat gamer success. I
could definitely see while I was playing our team that this system was bringing us much more
success than the 2014 team had and a bit more consistent game play.
That we were able to take this team all the way to our first
on-line full league championship was amazing. I want to
personally thank Bruce Foster for his help and trust that he
would allow this opportunity. But as with all things, if
you decide to participate in a league or tournament with the
on-line Strat Baseball Games, study the players picked by the
successful teams, look at their lineups and this should help you
see more success yourself.
So now that I won
two credits to play on-line due to the championship - I wonder
what I will do next to play in a new league? I guess it would be
cool to work with another hitting team that could be successful
- I will have to check it out. Thanks so much and until the next
adventure,
The Skokie
Wolfman
